BMS-DALLARA F190 Ford-Cosworth DFR

1990 for Giuseppe Lucchini's BMS Scuderia Italia team from Brescia is a decisive step back from the past. The 8 points collected with the 1989 F189 in fact bode well for the start of the new season, also because Christian Vanderpleyn, author of the AGS capable of doing well with Tarquini and Streiff in 88 and '89, was hired, replacing Mario Tollentino.

The technical management remains in the hands of Gian Paolo Dallara, whose new F190 single-seaters managed on the track by Scuderia Italia come out of the Varano de 'Melegari plants near Parma. Unfortunately, the change of the designer does not bear the hoped-for results, indeed the good things seen on the previous F189 are completely obscured by the choices of the new technician who, while not making major changes to the car, significantly worsen its performance.

The 190 is a very simple car that maintains the same carbon fiber and kevlar monocoque frame already seen on the F189, on which the V8 Ford-Cosworth DFR engine is still placed together with the Hewland-derived gearbox but modified by Dallara technicians. The only differences compared to the F189 are in a slight increase in the wheelbase and in the carriageways to obtain a greater footprint and, theoretically, a heavier set-up but this choice is not associated with a correct suspension set-up which thus leads to a performance degradation.

On an aesthetic level, the sleek and streamlined line of the F189 is slightly modified with more massive bellies and a bonnet that loses the elegant straight line of the previous version. Even the final part of the sides is sacrificed and removed to allow a better flow of hot air to avoid breakages, which was the cause of the many retirements in the 1989 championship finale. For the new season, Scuderia Italia confirms veteran Andrea de Cesaris alongside Emanuele Pirro, however, forced to miss the first two races of the championship due to health problems and replaced by Gianni Morbidelli.

As Enzo Ferrari said "Give a child a sheet of paper, some colors and ask him to design a racing car, he will surely make it red", probably this is not true for Lucchini's red single-seaters and in fact the poor performance of the F190 and its equally poor reliability does not allow the drivers to score points in the championship. Although almost always qualified for Sunday's race, the F190s manage to reach the finish line only on 6 occasions out of 30 starts, with the 10th place of Pirro in Hungary and de Cearis in Italy as the best results.
